Ingredients for Pigment Control
- Hydroquinone -the only ingredient currently approved by the FDA as a skin lightener. HQ works primarily by bleaching existing skin discoloration and also prevents future pigment from occurring.
- Kojic Acid –an antibacterial and antifungal agent that evens skin tone.
- Licorice – a very effective ingredient for gently evening skin discolorations that also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits.
- Lactic Acid – (sour milk) evens skin discoloration, hydrates and reduces the build up of dead skin cells.
- Arbutin - Can be found in wheat and pear skins. Arbutin inhibits tyrosinase which prevents the formation of melanin.
- Ascorbic Acid- (primarily citrus fruits) acts as a natural skin brightener.
Understanding Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone works by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment that causes darkening of the skin and leads to hyperpigmentation. Many dermatologists consider hydroquinone to be the most effective skin-lightening ingredient available, and it's the only skin-lightening agent approved by the FDA.
Currently, the FDA limits over-the-counter concentrations to 2% and prescription concentrations to 5%. In Europe and Asia, all levels of hydroquinone require a prescription, but is not banned, as some misinformation purports.

Q: Why should I use all the products in the System?
A: Each Obagi System is specifically designed to work together as a System. When used as a System, the formulas work together to effectively balance the pH level and penetrate ingredients to the layers of the skin--revealing superior results. A: Keeping in mind that extended sun exposure damages the skin, it is suggested to avoid prolonged sun exposure without protection. While on the system, you can participate in normal outdoor activity, however, your skin may be sensitive to the sun and heat.
